Every year, World Organ Donation Day is observed on August 13th. It is a day that is dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of organ donation and encouraging people to register as donors. This is also a day for honouring organ donors and their families, acknowledging their selfless contributions towards the society. The day recognises the importance of donating organs after death to save more lives. Organ donation can save the lives of people who are suffering from organ failure and chronic diseases. On this topic, Suraksha Clinic and Diagnostics held an in-depth discussion, with key note addresses delivered by the two senior doctors, noting the importance of organ donation.
Organ Donation and Transplantation is a Government-regulated activity in India according to the provisions of the Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues Act, 1994. According to this act, the commercialisation of organs is a punishable offence, further legalising the concept of brain death in India. As per a report, India ranks third in terms of Organ Transplantation in the world and second with regard to Corneal Transplantation. In the year 2023, India accomplished a milestone of reaching over 1,000 deceased organ donations. India witnesses around 17,000 to 18,000 solid organ transplants that are done every year, the most after US and China, according to a report. The most transplanted organ in the country is the kidney.
According to a report in the National Library of Medicine, organ transplantation in India has come a long way in the last few years; however, the fact that there is an increasing number of people who are living with chronic diseases, making availability and accessibility a considerable challenge, leads to early detection of chronic diseases becoming very important. There is also a growing need for continued discussions on the ethical and legal aspects of organ donation, besides promoting awareness surrounding deceased organ donation.
India has much to provide its neighbouring countries in establishing research and treatment capacities. The average number of organ transplants per donor has increased from 2.43 in 2016 to 3.05 in 2022, with most of these surgeries being carried out by the private health sector in the country, making it unaffordable for most patients, as per a report.
According to data, 13 people die every day while waiting for an organ transplant, and around 48,000+ transplants were performed in the year 2024. As per NOTTO, nearly 63.8% of all living organ donors from the year 2019 to 2023, for donating kidneys and liver, were mostly women, with men receiving the majority of donated organs, as much as 49.8% of the recipients (BMJ Report 2025). In the last five years, women were responsible for nearly 36,038 of the 56509 living organ donations, with only 17,041 being transplanted into women, and around 39,447 went to men, with the latter receiving organs at about 2.3 times the rate of women. The report further states that every 100 male donors benefited nearly 192.71 male recipients, while every 100 female donors benefited around 47 female recipients.
