Dr. Datta reflected on the university’s proud legacy, which began with the establishment of Bengal Veterinary College in 1894, one of India’s oldest veterinary institutions. Since its formation in 1995, WBUAFS has grown into a nationally recognized institution, accredited by ICAR and UGC, and holding an “A” grade from the Veterinary Council of India. He highlighted the university’s contributions in research and development—ranging from patented technologies and thermo-stable vaccines to region-specific animal health tools—and its active collaborations with premier national and international institutes. The university also operates three KrishiVigyanKendras in Jalpaiguri, North 24 Parganas, and Murshidabad to promote rural outreach.
It was highlighted that WBUAFS plays a pivotal role in strengthening India’s rapidly growing livestock, dairy, and fisheries sectors, which are vital to rural development, women’s empowerment, and employment generation. West Bengal’s consistent leadership in national indices of egg and meat production was particularly noted. The university also took pride in the remarkable achievements of its students and faculty—many of whom have excelled in national competitive examinations, received prestigious recognitions such as the Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Award and the RashtriyaKrishiVigyanPuraskar, or distinguished themselves as successful entrepreneurs and public administrators.
