Kolkata, 11th May 2026: In a significant step towards elevating India’s sports infrastructure to global benchmarks, a leading architecture firm, Populous has unveiled a comprehensive redevelopment vision for Eden Gardens in Kolkata, one of the cricket’s most iconic venues.
The proposed transformation goes beyond aesthetic upgrades, positioning Eden Gardens as a future-ready, multi-functional sporting and entertainment destination.
The redevelopment will expand seating capacity from 68,000 to 85,000 while introducing modern, safety-led infrastructure. At its core, the project reflects a shift towards infrastructure elevation integrating premium hospitality zones, diversified seating formats, and year-round usability supported by over 41,000 sq. ft. of hospitality infrastructure and 44,000 sq. ft. of non-match day facilities, six distinct seating categories, and a 30% increase in corporate hospitality capacity, unlocking new commercial and experiential opportunities for the venue.
Importantly, the redevelopment balances modern infrastructure with heritage preservation. Built in 1864 and widely regarded as the “Home of Indian Cricket,” Eden Gardens’ legacy remains central to the design approach, with curated experiences such as a museum, hall of fame, and digital engagement zones ensuring the venue remains culturally anchored while technologically advanced.
A standout feature of the redevelopment is the addition of a Sky Deck and Sky Lounge, offering panoramic views and creating a new social and premium engagement layer within the stadium ecosystem. Complementing this are dedicated IPL fan zones, corporate boxes, lounges, and a Members’ Club designed to seamlessly connect the venue with its surrounding urban landscape.
Speaking on the redevelopment, Siddharth Soni, Principal & Architect, Populous, said, “The redevelopment will transform Eden Gardens into a truly 21st-century venue, placing safety, sustainability, and the fan experience at its core to meet the evolving demands of modern sport. As the game continues to change, our approach goes beyond restoration, we are enhancing an icon to ensure it carries forward its legacy while embracing the future.”
President of the Cricket Association of Bengal and former Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly, said, "Our vision is to make Eden Gardens one of the finest cricketing venues in the world, not just in capacity but in quality, comfort and experience. I've grown up playing here, feeling the roar of this crowd. To now be part of its transformation is deeply special - it's about giving back to a place that has given me everything."
Pranav Kashyap, Associate Principal, Populous, added, “The project presented multiple challenges, from working within a tight, historic inner-city site with limited scope for expansion to ensuring the redevelopment respected the venue’s legacy and context. However, we focused on turning these constraints into opportunities for the venue, players, and fans, unlocking premium hospitality, enhancing the event-day experience, and creating avenues beyond match days. Through this, we aim to create an unparalleled experience in India, where every strike of the bat is heard loud and clear above the roar of the crowd.”
This project also reflects the strength of international collaboration in driving infrastructure innovation. Supported by Trade and Investment Queensland (TIQ), the Queensland Government’s global business agency, Populous’ continued engagement in India underscores TIQ’s role in facilitating long-term partnerships, enabling knowledge exchange, and supporting Australian expertise in contributing to large-scale infrastructure development projects in key global markets.
With a strong emphasis on fan-first design, commercial scalability, and multi-use infrastructure, Populous is known for designing global sporting landmarks including the Narendra Modi Stadium, Lord’s Cricket Ground, and the Melbourne Cricket Ground, brings its international expertise to address the complexities of redeveloping a dense, heritage-rich urban site.
